So do you remember the bees from my last blog post? Well, let me tell you the rest of the story…
Shortly after my previous post I answered our front door to a stranger. He had a very concerned look on his face. After identifying himself as a relative visiting the family across the street he asked if I knew about the bees.
I blithely said, “Yes, we have lots of happy bees in our lavender hedge. “
Well, that wasn’t quite the answer he expected. Still with that look of serious concern he said he had called the police and the animal control people and no one was willing to help. He wanted me to be forewarned not to exit from my garage door. Now he had my full attention. I went outside with my new best friend to see what he saw. Now I consider myself a very welcoming and congenial hostess but, really? Police? Animal Control?
25,000 – 30,000 bees were happily occupying our weeping cherry tree!
It was an impressive thing to see. There were about 50 bees flying around the tree. It seemed to be calm enough until closer scrutiny showed an undulating mass about the size of an overgrown basket ball taking up quite a bit a space in the center of the tree.
After thanking him I went in and contacted Joe@MarinHoneyBees.com who agreed to help re-locate my house guests. It took Joe about 3 hours to capture nearly 30,000 bees and a queen bee in 5 gallon buckets covered over with screens. He even gave me directions to where he would be taking them should I want to visit. He also said to expect a re-occurrence next year!
